PT-141 is the old research code name for bremelanotide, and it stuck around in casual use long after the compound got an actual brand name. Names like that tend to survive online long after the industry moves on, because search habits change more slowly than regulatory paperwork does. Today, searching for where to buy PT-141 turns up three different products wearing the same name: an FDA-approved injectable, nasal spray listings that were never that approved product, and research-grade vials sold for laboratory use. Nothing in that list is interchangeable with anything else in it, even though a search results page will happily mix all three together under one heading. This guide covers the research-use sourcing route, not usage or dosing advice, and it exists to help you tell the three apart before you read any further into a specific listing. Bremelanotide, formerly known as PT-141, is FDA-approved under the brand name Vyleesi, NDA 210557, approved in 2019 for premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder. The approved product ships as a single-dose, disposable auto-injector, supplied as 1.75 mg of bremelanotide in a 0.3 mL solution, delivering the drug under the skin rather than through the nose. That route matters because a lot of PT-141 marketing implies a spray is the real, approved way to take it. It never has been. The only regulatory-approved delivery method on record is the subcutaneous auto-injector, and every other delivery format sold under the PT-141 or bremelanotide name is, by definition, not that approved product, whatever the marketing copy implies about equivalence. The approved indication is also narrow: according to the drug's label, Vyleesi is not indicated for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in postmenopausal women, in men, or for enhancing sexual performance generally. A listing that markets a bremelanotide product broadly, to any buyer, for general enhancement, is already describing something outside what the approved product was ever evaluated or approved for.
Intranasal bremelanotide was studied in an early-stage clinical trial that looked at safety and tolerability, including interaction with alcohol, well before Vyleesi's approval. A Phase 1 safety trial is a long way from an approved product. It answers a narrow question, usually about tolerability and basic pharmacokinetics in a small group of volunteers, not whether a product is safe and effective enough to approve for general sale, and intranasal bremelanotide never advanced to that point. A listing selling a PT-141 nasal spray is not selling the approved medicine in a different form. It is selling something that, as far as the public regulatory record shows, was tested at an early stage and never carried through to approval in that form. That does not tell you anything specific about the quality of a given nasal spray listing, since this guide has not tested one, but it does mean the phrase FDA-approved formula does not apply to a spray, whatever the product page says about it being based on clinical research.
Separate from both of the above is research-grade PT-141, sold by peptide suppliers as a raw compound, usually a lyophilized powder in a sealed vial, intended for laboratory research rather than as a consumer product with a matching regulatory file. This is the category most listings labeled research use only actually fall into, and it is the one this guide's scoring criteria actually apply to. None of the framing above is medical or dosing guidance. It is a map of what different listings for the same name actually are, so you know which category a given page is selling into before you evaluate anything else about it. A vial correctly labeled and sold as a research compound is not automatically a problem; the problem shows up when a research-use disclaimer sits next to marketing that borrows credibility from the approved drug or from an unapproved trial.
Part of the confusion is structural rather than accidental. Bremelanotide, PT-141, and Vyleesi all refer to versions of the same underlying molecule at different points in its history, from early research code name to approved brand name, and sellers across all three categories have an incentive to use whichever name currently has the most search volume rather than the name that most accurately describes what they are selling. That is not unique to this compound, but it is unusually pronounced here because the approved product, the abandoned nasal-spray research, and the ongoing research-use vial market all overlap in time rather than one clearly replacing another. Knowing that going in is most of the work of reading a listing correctly. It also means the safest habit when you read any PT-141 or bremelanotide listing is to ask which of the three categories in this guide it actually belongs to before you look at price, purity claims, or anything else on the page.
A research-grade PT-141 vial should come with a batch-specific certificate of analysis confirming both identity, that the peptide sequence matches bremelanotide, and purity, how much of the vial's content is that peptide rather than synthesis byproducts. A listing with no lab name attached to its testing, or with a purity number and nothing else behind it, has not given you enough to verify anything. The same applies whether the vial is labeled PT-141 or bremelanotide acetate, since sellers use both names for the same research-use category and neither name substitutes for actual paperwork. If a seller cannot tell you which lab ran the testing behind their purity claim, that is a gap worth treating as seriously as a missing COA altogether, since an unnamed lab cannot be checked or held to anything.
Watch for a nasal spray product described with confident usage instructions as if it were the approved medicine, when the approved medicine has never existed in that form. Watch for marketing that blurs the line between the research vial and Vyleesi, borrowing the approved product's credibility for a different item entirely, sometimes through a side-by-side comparison that never quite states outright that the two are different things. Watch for claims that a product works for men or for postmenopausal women when the only approved use of bremelanotide is for a specific condition in premenopausal women, since that is a sign the seller either has not read the label they are borrowing credibility from or is choosing to ignore what it actually says. These patterns are not unique to PT-141, but they show up here more than average, because the approved product, the trial history, and the research-use vials all share the same casual name, which gives a seller more room to blur the lines without technically lying about any single fact.
